Narrows Wildlife Connections Group

The Narrows Wildlife Connections Group was formed in 2019 to work with Cheshire West and Chester Council to improve the biodiversity of the Narrows Park in Hoole and to improve the area through planting, pruning and basic maintenance.

Volunteers from the surrounding area are involved in this work and they have now successfully developed a wild flower meadow and other areas planted with bulbs to attarct insects.

In 2022 The Narrows Wildlife Connections Group was succesful in obtaining funding from the players of the People’s Postcode Lottery to build and install planters and signage in the park to develop the ‘edibles’ area.

The sign explains the background to the planters and there are also general notes which are written on blackboards attached to each planter.

Some of the first plants were donated by Maple Grove School, which is a local school providing a specialist setting for learners with autism, and others were bought from the funding that was received, as well as some plants donated by volunteers.

In the hot weather that summer, local people and dog walkers helped out with the watering of the plants, which kept them happy.

We have planted a new stock of seeds and plants for 2023 and have had some great feedback from local people and users of the park. The squirrels, birds and other wildlife in the park also enjoyed sharing the produce and seeds.
